Development

THE PITCH

Soar is a portrait-mode, one-handed exploration game where players catch gusts of wind with a kite drone. By angling their kite to match the wind’s direction, they can rise quickly through the smog that covers the earth’s surfaced, uncovering environmental mysteries above. The control scheme is particularly unique because players manipulate a spool at the base of the screen, rather than controlling the kite directly.

MY ROLE

I took on more hats than I ever have on any game project while working on Soar, including headwear for the artist, level designer, composer, and programmer roles, in addition to producing the work.

After concepting the core gameplay in Figma, I collaborated closely with longtime friend, Travis Chandler to bring it to life in Unity. Then, we refined the physics system to feel more and more like flying a kite. Once the core controls felt good, I created art assets for us using DALLE and Photoshop and built levels, while Travis polished the codebase and hunted down bugs.
